NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Delete another “first” from the list for the Notre Dame coach Marco Freeman. He has already led a team on the pitch as head coach. He drove Notre Dame in a spring full of training. And on Friday, Freeman led the Fighting Irish in his first training session as head coach.
No longer the defensive coordinator he had been for the past six seasons at Purdue, Cincinnati and Notre Dame, Freeman was leading the show for the first time as head coach when Fighting Irish took the field under the fence of the Irish Athletic Center and on the i fields out.
“It’s nice to get under the belt,” Freeman said. “I’m used to being the one who whistles now.”
Freeman did not limit himself to one part of the pitch as he was as a position coordinator and coach during his coaching career which began in 2010. He spent the two and a half hours of Friday’s session spending time with as many players as possible. position groups, on both sides of the ball.
“For me, it’s a part of spending time with your players,” Freeman explained. “And that’s why I’m going to move on to individual drills, because, again, I’m not an offensive manager (or) a defensive manager or special teams. I’m just the head coach and I want to make sure I spend time with every position group. ”
Friday was the first of 19 free practice that Freeman’s Irish will have during its first fall camp.
“That first practice, just as it is for the players, is the same thing for the coaches to get into your routine,” noted the Irish manager. “Hopefully, by the second or third day I don’t have to look at my script to know what the next period will be. I’ll know exactly what’s going on. “
Talking Tobias (Merriweather)
True freshman wide receiver Tobias Merriweather he’s only been on campus since June, but he made a good first impression. West Carmas, a native of Wash, looked good on the first day of the fall camp.
He’s 6-4 at 198 lean pounds, but has good body control and explosiveness out of his breaks. Freeman says there is an opportunity for the former four-star recruit this year.
“I think he’s a guy who’s in a position where the depth in that room isn’t extremely long,” Freeman said. “So, he’s in a position where he’ll have to come forward soon. And, you know, if he’s ready to help us, he’ll play. I think, due to the depth in that room, you will see him have a lot more opportunities.
“It’s long, it can run (and) I’ve heard nothing but great things since the summer, what it did, and so I’m excited to see what it does.”
Fighting Irish started their retirement with a fairly healthy team. Freeman said only three players: running back Jadarian pricenarrow end Mitchell Evans and wide receiver Joe Wilkins Jr. they are currently the only three players who will not play in the September 3 season opener against Ohio State.
There are other players who trained on the first day of the retreat but are on limited duty to start the field.
“There’s a progression for some guys to go back,” Freeman said. “You know, we can’t just go to zero and put them there (a) 100. So, we’ve got some guys there with limited reps.”

Those players include Logan Diggs (shoulder), Marist Liufau (ankle), Avery Davis (LCA) e Berrong dog (LCA).
Diggs suffered a lip tear on his left shoulder during the Blue-Gold scrimmage in April. He was the only non-quarterback who wore a red jersey in Friday’s free practice, which means limited contact. He also wore a black support sleeve / brace on his shoulder and upper arm.
No Culver fields
In the past few years, Notre Dame has started the fall camp at Culver Academies, which is located approximately 34 miles south of the campus. This is out now.
“It wasn’t even something we talked about,” Freeman said. “I know that in the last two years they haven’t done it, due to Covid, but it hasn’t even been pulled out, being available for this year.”
