Insurance industry catching the eye of job-seeking African-Americans

(ARA) – Americans are more interested than ever in identifying new job opportunities in growing industries. While emerging opportunities in technology and health care industries have won a lot of attention, another long-established industry is poised for growth – insurance.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts demand for insurance will continue to rise, and the industry will experience “significant growth” over the long term. As baby boomers age, their need for different types of insurance products will likely increase.  This is also likely to be the case for their adult children and their families.

The growth in the industry should be of particular interest to African-Americans seeking a high-growth profession, some industry watchers say. That’s because demand for insurance products and services that meet the needs of the African-American population is expected to rise, and with it the need for insurance professionals who know how to serve the market.

“There is a greater need in the insurance industry for professionals educated and experienced in African-American culture,” says Jodi Webster, a district manager for Farmers Insurance Group in northern California. “The industry is realizing — and responding to — the need to provide education to the African-American community on the importance of having the proper insurance in place, especially in the life insurance arena.”

In addition to the opportunity to fill a high-demand role that will help educate their community, African-Americans might find a career as an insurance agent interesting for several other reasons, says Webster. A Farmers agent for five years and district manager for eight, Webster feels an insurance career as an agent offers the opportunity to be self-employed, in control of one’s own professional destiny and provides an unlimited income potential.

“As an agent, I was an independent contractor, not an employee,” she says. “For agents, there’s a huge opportunity to serve an evolving, growing African-American marketplace. Plus, you get to be in business for yourself, but not by yourself. The investment required to start an agency is affordable and you gain the benefit of corporate branding and support.”

Major insurance providers are also realizing the value of agents who can culturally connect with the African-American community. Farmers, for example, recently launched its African-American Market Expansion, which aims to provide products and services to a growing market segment. As part of that initiative, the company has focused recruitment efforts in the African-American community to expand awareness of career opportunities with the company.

“This initiative will help Farmers better serve the African-American community’s insurance and financial needs,” says Faye W. McClure, Farmers vice president of strategic marketing. “The campaign aims to increase Farmers’ exposure to the second largest minority group in the nation.” Farmers African-American Market Expansion will initially focus on eight states; California, Illinois, Texas, Ohio, Virginia, Michigan, Alabama and Tennessee.

As a people person, Webster says, the opportunity to serve the African-American community has been professionally and personally rewarding. “I like the opportunity to coach and mentor people to develop successful agencies,” she says. “It’s rewarding to help them develop their ability to realize their dreams and provide themselves and their families with a comfortable lifestyle.”

“Need for insurance knowledge and education continues to grow in the African-American community, and so will opportunities for agents adept at serving this community,” she adds.

New medicine approved by FDA to treat type 2 diabetes

(ARA) – Diabetes (both type 1 and type 2) affects approximately 25.8 million Americans and an estimated 220 million people worldwide. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type, accounting for an estimated 90 to 95 percent of diabetes cases. Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the body either does not properly produce, or use, the hormone insulin.

Now there is good news for people with type 2 diabetes. Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Eli Lilly and Company announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved TRADJENTA(TM) (linagliptin) tablets, a new prescription medication used along with diet and exercise, to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes.

TRADJENTA (pronounced TRAD gen ta) can be used alone or with other commonly used medications for type 2 diabetes – metformin, sulfonylurea or pioglitazone. TRADJENTA lowered hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C or A1C) levels up to 0.7 percent (compared to placebo) in clinical trials.

A1C is measured in people with diabetes to provide an index of blood sugar control for the previous two to three months.

TRADJENTA should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis (increased ketones in the blood or urine). It has not been studied in combination with insulin.

“Many people with type 2 diabetes are not able to control their blood sugar with diet and exercise alone and may also require one or more medications,” says Dr. John Gerich, professor of medicine, at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. “The FDA approval of TRADJENTA is exciting because there is only one dose to remember for patients, regardless of kidney or liver impairment. With TRADJENTA, physicians will have another option for managing type 2 diabetes, a potentially devastating condition.”

TRADJENTA is a tablet that can be taken once a day, with or without food. It lowers blood sugar by increasing incretin levels, which increase insulin levels after meals and throughout the day.

It was approved based on a clinical trial program which included approximately 4,000 adults with type 2 diabetes. Included in the program were placebo-controlled studies evaluating TRADJENTA alone and with other commonly-used medications for type 2 diabetes.

TRADJENTA lowered fasting plasma glucose (FPG) compared to placebo, when used as monotherapy and in combination with metformin, sulfonylurea or pioglitazone. FPG is used to determine glucose levels in a fasting state, usually upon waking up in the morning.

It also lowered two-hour post-prandial glucose (PPG) levels compared with placebo as monotherapy and when used in combination with metformin. PPG is used to determine glucose levels after meals, usually two hours after eating.

Also tell your doctor if you take rifampin (Rifadin(R), Rimactane(R), Rifater(R), Rifamate(R)), an antibiotic that is used to treat tuberculosis.

TRADJENTA may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how TRADJENTA works.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

What are the possible side effects of TRADJENTA?

The lighting control category will be judging the products based on functionality, ease of use and installation, innovation and ability to work with other systems and existing lights. These specific lighting control devices must be compatible with both LED and florescent technologies.

The solid state lighting competition division is in its fifth year, and will feature designs judged on the basis of performance, style and energy efficiency of the lights. This competition is open to a very broad range of residential lighting applications and fixture types as well as replacement lamps.

The Lighting for Tomorrow winners will be announced at the American Lighting Association Conference in Palm Beach, Florida from September 11th-13th. Winners will be promoted by energy efficiency programs across the US and Canada.

Collaboration with professor to help increase stormwater control area success.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation and N.C. State are combining forces to improve stormwater control in an area affecting N.C. State, Meredith College and the N.C. Museum of Art.

“By combining our resources with the renowned research capabilities of N.C. State University, we are developing innovative solutions for improving water quality – and in turn, helping to protect one of our state’s most valuable resources,” said Matt Lauffer, program manager for NCDOT’s Highway Stormwater Program, in a press release.

The project aims to benefit the House Creek watershed, an area that collects pollutants from cars and other ground sources when it rains. House Creek is one of several stormwater control projects NCDOT monitors annually. The construction is taking place near the intersection of Wade Ave. and Interstate 440.

Dr. Bill Hunt, assistant professor and extension specialist with the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, will be working with NCDOT to develop methods to reduce the amount of pollutants.

Dr. Hunt has assisted since 2000 with the design, installation, and monitoring of over 90 stormwater best management practices (BMPs), including bioretention, stormwater wetlands, innovative wet ponds, green roofs and permeable pavement.

Julia Merchant, NCDOT communications officer, said this is not the first time NCDOT has partnered with N.C. State. Past collaborations involved, among others, breakthroughs with biodiesel research conducted by the University.

According to NCDOT, for the $300,000 House Creek project, funded through the Highway Stormwater Program, engineers will use stormwater filtration methods such as a bioretention basin, which will use sand to filter out pollutants in the water.

After installation of the stormwater control measures is completed, which will take approximately three weeks according to NCDOT, N.C. State researchers will continuously monitor the system’s effectiveness at improving the House Creek water quality.

Charities tapping into social networks for support


(ARA) – The way we talk with our friends, the way we date, eat, watch TV, even the way we vote has been transformed by the sudden and overwhelming popularity of social media technology. Our activities in the actual world are becoming ever more deeply intertwined with our activities in the virtual world.

In their ongoing efforts to find new supporters and strengthen bonds with the ones they already have, charities, too, are flocking to social media. Unlike letters in your mailbox or TV commercials, digital platforms like Facebook and Twitter give charities a chance to engage supporters in emotionally powerful ways – ways that not only encourage monetary giving, but turn supporters into full-blown advocates.  

Take the example of the humanitarian organization CARE. In 1946, CARE began sending boxes of food and essential supplies to a Europe reeling from Second World War. The program resonated with so many senders and receivers that the phrase “care package” became a common synonym for any gift parcels sent to far-away friends and relatives. Today the organization is trying to tap into fond memories of this legacy through social media. At www.CAREpackage.org, CARE invites donors to fill a digital CARE Package with money supporting CARE’s long-term poverty fighting programs focusing on girls’ education, maternal health, and economic empowerment for women through microfinance and small business training. CARE is not alone in using social networking to generate support. Applications like TwitChange generate interest and big money for charitable causes by auctioning the opportunity to be followed, mentioned or retweeted by their favorite celebrities on Twitter.

Even large corporate givers with a big presence in traditional marketing venues are moving into the social media space. General Mills and Merck have teamed up for an online charitable giving project called Join My Village. Simply by clicking on hyperlinks to videos, visitors to www.JoinMyVillage.com can steer donations from the two corporations to a microsavings program helping rural girls and women in Malawi. Because the site interfaces with Facebook and Twitter, it’s easy for users to invite their social networks to participate, increasing total donations, but also awareness of poverty issues around the globe.

How charitable giving through social networking will evolve during the next years, or even the next 10 months, is anyone’s guess. A decade ago, few people (if anyone) predicted the social network-based advocacy and giving that’s exploding in popularity today. What is certain is that changes in technology inevitably create new ways for charities and supporters to connect.

Five steps to take when considering a career change

(ARA) – Is this the right time for you to follow your passion or to reinvent yourself and make a career change? If so, make sure you can put your finger on what you want, so that you can sell yourself to prospective employers.

Carole Redden, director of career services at Brown Mackie College – Phoenix, offers five career-change tips.

Network with a mission
Networking is vital to reinventing yourself or making a career move, but according to Redden, it should be done strategically and often. “You cannot wait for the job of your dreams to come to you,” says Redden. “There are people who attend networking events and do not maximize the number of people they talk to, or do not ask the right questions. If you are looking for a job, you must have a plan.”

Establish your targets before attending networking events and job fairs, and keep the conversation brief and to the point. Develop a relationship with employer representatives you chat with and remember, it’s not just about what you can get from them, but what they can gather from you. It’s a two-way exchange of information. To learn more about networking strategies read “Never Eat Alone,” where author Keith Ferrazzi contends that you’ll be more successful if you take the relationship-building approach. “You should circulate and make multiple new contacts at these events,” Redden says. Those who are unsure about how to network should think of it as “purposeful and engaging communication.”

Most people have more of a network of friends, family, former coworkers and other connections than they realize. It’s important to share your plans with them and ask for help. “If you don’t already have a network, try volunteering or going back to school – both are great ways to meet new people,” Redden adds.

Examine your skills and resources
You don’t have to be stuck in a job. Be proactive. Do a personal assessment and ask yourself: What background, skills and experience can I offer an employer? “If you’ve been in a job for 20 years, ask yourself, ‘What do I really want to do for a living?’,” says Redden. “Make some changes and some tough decisions. It may not be easy, but it’s worth it. Job seeking takes patience.”

Update your credentials
Many jobs require additional education or training. Take classes at local college, or a community or education center. Some nonprofit organizations offer free or low-cost training. If required, obtain certification for your chosen field. “Once you have a developed your ‘brand,’ you’ve got to make yourself more marketable than the next person,” says Redden.

Pursue your passion/your goal
A career is more than a job; for some it’s also a passion, and the career path chosen will require some work. “Some people get so caught up in life pleasing others and forget they have the option to do what makes them happy,” says Redden. If you are out of work, be more diligent. Until you get to where you want to go, you should be willing to work harder in pursuing your passion. The practice of reinvention takes effort. For people who like delivering babies, they are happy when they go to work every morning because they have a passion for what they do.

Volunteer with nonprofits
Use your weekends to volunteer. “This is an opportunity to support those nonprofits that could benefit from your experience,” says Redden. With reinvention, you can still give back and offer to help those who are less fortunate. You will gain valuable work experience in your career of choice.

You can take the Myers-Briggs professional or similar assessments offered by many college career and employment counselors to measure competencies and areas of interest. “If you want a life change, then it’s up to you to do something about it,” says Redden. Be realistic about your strengths, skills and resources. Within reason and with passion, reinventing yourself is possible.

The project assembles the country’s leading emergency and resuscitation experts to expand successful response programs in five pilot states. The goal is to improve out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rates by at least 50 percent in five years in these states.

HeartRescue partners at the Universities of Arizona, Duke, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Washington and their partner agencies will coordinate proven protocols and high-tech treatments that show SCA is treatable.

“There is a 500 percent variation in survival after cardiac arrest,” said Dr. Graham Nichol, a HeartRescue partner at the University of Washington. “Many people don’t realize that cardiac arrest can be treated. In many regions, bystanders, emergency response and hospitals are not working together to help the patient.”

What You Can Do

Success begins with public bystanders. Communities with higher bystander CPR participation have higher SCA survival rates. Bystanders can take the following three steps to increase survival rates: Recognize the signs of SCA and call 911, begin CPR and find an automated external defibrillator (AED).

• Recognize the signs of SCA—If you see someone suddenly collapse, lose consciousness and stop breathing, that person could be experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Immediately call 911.

• Perform CPR-Begin hands—only CPR: Push hard and fast on the chest-about 100 compressions a minute. Let the chest rise completely between compressions.

• Find an AED—Continue chest compressions until emergency personnel arrive. If possible, have someone get an automated external defibrillator, turn it on and follow the directions.

Summer months provide ideal opportunity for charitable endeavors

Pay it forward: Children have the power to make a difference

(ARA) – In many ways, the joint birthday party in late January for 8-year old Sofia Segalla and her best friend, Clara Goulding, was full of traditional fun. They and 28 of their classmates enjoyed inflatable structures, a whirlwind of exciting games and exchanging giggles like only 8-year-olds can.

What was unusual, and truly inspiring about Sofia and Clara’s party, however, is that in lieu of gifts, the girls requested that donations be made to a Chicago-based nonprofit, Friends of the Orphans, to help children in need in Haiti who were affected by the country’s devastating January 2010 earthquake. The birthday guests contributed approximately $900 to St. Damien’s Pediatric Hospital, an amount that pleasantly surprised Sofia’s mom Michele.

“We did something similar for my son several years ago when he was 5, and this year, Sofia was truly excited about doing a party fundraiser,” says Michele Segalla. “It really made her think, and she’s more aware about people in need and how fortunate she is.”

It’s no secret that Americans are a generous bunch, and according to Giving USA, 83 percent of philanthropic dollars are contributed by individuals. In 2009, this amount totaled just more than $227 billion. While adults are well-versed in the benefits of philanthropic giving, teaching children the impact they can make by getting involved in fundraising activities and volunteerism can help shape a future generation of leaders.

“Helping others in need, and in Friends of the Orphans’ case, helping children in need, is tightly woven into our country’s fabric,” says Sharon Saxelby, president and CEO of Friends of the Orphans.

“By involving our children in charitable opportunities from a young age, we are not only reinforcing how blessed they may be in their own lives, but we are demonstrating that even the smallest initiative can make them feel good and change the lives of others. It’s important for adults to lead by example,” she says.

For parents interested in involving their children in charitable initiatives, how do they begin? With the lazy days of summer quickly approaching, parents have a wide open opportunity to seize some of those free hours and work side-by-side with their children on identifying which causes might appeal to them and how much time they can dedicate.

Based on what sparks their children’s interest, whether it’s sports, animals, nature, music or something else, parents and their kids can jointly research local or national opportunities for donation recipients. Sites like CharityNavigator.com allow visitors to search by category, hot topics or top 10 lists. Another option is to stay local. For instance, if a child has a love of animals, contact the local animal shelter to see what is at the top of their “wish list.” The most important thing when considering a cause to support is that the children get excited about it.

For a suburban Chicago 13-year-old, Caleigh Joyce, choosing an organization to benefit from her eighth-grade confirmation service project was an easy decision. Her family is a long-time Friends of the Orphans sponsor to 11-year-old Dulce from Cuernavaca, Mexico, so Caleigh knew she wanted to directly help children in need there.

For her “Frutas y Verduras Para los Amigos y Victorias” (Fruits and Vegetables For Friends) project, Caleigh created a flier, a mass e-mail to family and friends, and a website (friendsoftheorphans.org/caleighsproject) explaining her ambitious goal of raising approximately $2,000 to purchase four months of fresh fruits and vegetables for 180 high school children living in a group home in Cuernavaca. After visiting the home and her “sister” Dulce in February, she felt even closer to the cause and saw the direct impact her efforts will make.

“I chose to do this because it’s really meaningful and makes me feel good. It’s important, so I’m talking to a lot of friends and family about donating,” Caleigh says.

Saxelby notes that a secondary benefit to children getting involved in charitable endeavors is that it strengthens their future college applications and helps them distinguish themselves from their peers.

After children identify who they want to raise money for, the next step is how to raise the money. It doesn’t have to be complicated, and many activities can be completed in a day. Based on the age of the child and how many friends and adults he or she can enlist to assist, a few suggestions to consider, especially during the summer months, include:

* Neighborhood dog wash
* Charity car wash
* Used book sale
* Making and selling homemade jewelry
* Birthday party donation in lieu of gifts
* Backyard movie night on large screen under the stars

“There are so many worthy charitable organizations and creative ways to raise money. By fostering an existing love, children will be more motivated to stay involved,” Saxelby says. “Whether raising money to help the local animal shelter buy puppy food, or volunteering to clean up a park where kids spend hours playing basketball, that personal connection is really important.

“Today’s children have so much power to really make an impact in our world. Engaging kids in charitable initiatives creates a deeper bond within their own families and also brings them closer to those they are helping.”
